C2 Ventures Backs Shelfmark's Push to Make Overlooked Production Lines Smarter

Production intelligence built on the factory floor. Backed by investors who've been there.

Shelfmark is excited to welcome C2 Ventures as an investor in the second close of our $3.5 million seed round, led by Armory Square Ventures. C2 Ventures, led by Chris Cunningham and Matt Olivo, focuses exclusively on dirty, dull and dangerous businesses. Those are the businesses we serve: companies most people have never heard of, making the films, labels, textiles and coatings the world depends on, and long overlooked by frontier technology. We're also welcoming Jay Sehgal and Wyatt Bramhall as investors in this close.

"Every partner we bring on should make us better at serving the people running these lines," said Pat O'Donnell, Founder and CEO of Shelfmark. "When you have a chance to add domain experts to your team, sometimes you need to build a bigger tent. C2’s domain expertise is a vote of confidence in our approach to production intelligence for continuous manufacturing, and we're thrilled to have them on the team."

"Shelfmark is exactly the type of company we built C2 Ventures to support," said Chris Cunningham, Founder of C2 Ventures. "The team is bringing practical AI into an enormous industrial market where the problems are real, the value is measurable, and existing technology has fallen short. Shelfmark is helping manufacturers reduce waste and improve quality today while building toward production lines that get smarter with every run."

The problem we set out to solve

On a continuous-flow line, industrial films, labels, textiles and coatings can run past at hundreds of feet per minute. In most plants, from top manufacturers to small-town shops, quality inspection still depends on a person watching that material go by, shift after shift, hunting for flaws that can be thinner than a hair.

No one can hold that level of focus for eight or twelve hours. When a defect slips through, the cost compounds: scrapped material, rework, stopped lines, downgraded product, rejected shipments and frustrated customers.

Machine vision has been tried before. But legacy systems tend to be costly, rigid and hard to retune when a plant changes materials, products or conditions. That's a real problem when a single plant can run hundreds of SKUs.

"We kept meeting operators who were being asked to do something no human can do reliably," said O'Donnell. "The answer wasn't to ask them to try harder. It was to give them a system that never blinks and actually adapts to their line."

What we built: a line that remembers

Shelfmark is an AI-native production intelligence platform for continuous-flow manufacturing. We pair line-scan cameras and deep-learning computer vision with production data to inspect 100% of material in real time, at up to 99.5% accuracy, including materials once considered too fast, reflective or variable to automate.

When we find a defect, operators get an alert immediately, and every run leaves behind a digital record. We then tie each defect to the conditions around it, such as temperature, humidity, pressure and line speed, so teams can see why it happened and spot the same pattern across runs.

We're a partner, not a vendor. We run the whole system, from cameras and edge hardware to software and models, and we own the result on the line. Plant teams get the results without building or staffing a machine-vision program.

"Catching a defect is table stakes," said O'Donnell. "What our customers really want is to never see that defect again. That means the line needs a memory, and that's what we're building."

Results from the floor

We worked with more than 40 manufacturing facilities building the solution, and nine of every ten pilots have become paying customers. Across those deployments, customers have reported:

MeasureReported result
Waste reductionUp to 90%
Inspection labor50% lower
Inspection accuracyUp to 99.5%
Return on investmentUp to 7x

In plain terms: less scrap, less manual inspection, fewer interruptions and more good product from the same equipment and people.

"A pilot only means something if the plant wants to keep it running," said O'Donnell. "Nine out of ten deciding to stay tells us we're solving a problem they feel every day."

Why C2 Ventures

We wanted investors who understand industrial technology: what it takes to sell into legacy markets, and how to turn a strong deployment into a lasting company. C2 Ventures has spent years backing AI-supported software, robotics and automation in exactly those kinds of industries.

Most of all, C2 Ventures cares about the same people we do. The manufacturers we serve are often written off as dull or unsexy, but they make the products that build the world. We want the people on those lines to focus on meaningful work, backed by automation that honors their craft. Our mission is to bring distinctly human automation to every factory and restore dignity and efficiency to modern industrial craft.

"We build with our customers and for our customers, straight from the line," said O'Donnell. "Having a sector-aligned fund like C2 Ventures validate that approach means a great deal to us and to our partners. They get why it matters."

The close also brings in two individual investors, Jay Sehgal and Wyatt Bramhall.

"I learned a lot from both Jay and Wyatt during the fundraise," said O'Donnell. "Their guidance and input have already been invaluable as we scale the business."

What comes next

This funding will go toward product development, commercial expansion and growing our team in Pittsburgh.

Longer term, every run we inspect adds to a dataset our customers can learn from. That opens a path from detecting defects, to finding root causes, to recommending fixes, and eventually to lines that correct themselves before a problem starts. Our vision is managed AI on every continuous line in America, and everywhere our customers run.

"Today we help plants catch problems earlier and waste less," said O'Donnell. "Tomorrow, we want every line we touch to learn from its own history so the same mistake doesn't happen twice. We have lots of momentum to close out the year, and it's only made stronger with a strong team. We're grateful to Armory Square, C2 Ventures, Jay, Wyatt and all of our partners for backing that vision."

You know your line. We make it smarter. Together.
